About Woothie

My name is Nicola, but I write here and elsewhere as Woothie, a name that derives from my stepdaughter’s name, Ruth.  Originally, we’d bought this domain for her, but she just wasn’t that interested so I snatched it up.

I have two beautiful children, Jake and Abby, with my husband, Stephen, and three lovely stepdaughters too.  But on to crafting…

I have been beading since I was about 10.  My Mum had taken me to our local craft shop and I found little tubes of the tiniest little seed beads.  Having shown an interest, my Mum forked out for a few multi-colored tubes and some string and soon thereafter, my whole family was decked out in matching necklaces and bracelets.

Bit by bit, my collection grew – as did my knowledge – and I realized just how vast the subject of jewelry-making is.  Beads have always been my thing, but it’s so easy to branch out into wire-wrapping, stamping and much more.

In my teens, my Mum tried to teach me to knit.  But she’s right-handed and I’m left-handed and that really didn’t go well.  I was frustrated, doing my stitches too tight or dropping the stitches alltogether.  I gave up.

Then, about a year ago, in my thirties, I watched a friend crochet a simple dishcloth and I was fascinated.  It took her 15 minutes to teach me the single crochet and the double crochet and I was off.  Dishcloths and scarves soon became hats, bags and stuffed animals.

YouTube became my best friend.  I watched the amazingly detailed videos on how to do fancier stitches and really spruced up my creations.

I have now started to combine my two interests and I make wire-crocheted necklaces.  Fantastic!

I love Craftgawker and Pinterest, both of which you’ll find in my links above.  I get loads of ideas from those sites and only ever feel frustration at my lack of budget to make all these things.

Anyway, enough about me…
